Hi all,
Juergen is quite right to assume that this actual event is not easy to
negotiate. Its a bit like note stealing in polyphonic synths, there is
no right answer. However, I do prefer the simple method of multiplying
the output of the ADSR with the velocity CV. This is sometimes
accomplished by using a VCA at the output of the EG, or perhaps an
additional VCA in the audio path. For signal purity the former is to be
preferred. The sudden change in a decaying loud tail to a low level
attack phase can be made more natural with a wee bit of reverb.
But another question arises too. Should the velocity CV be exponential
with strike velocity or linear? I have gotten used to a linear VCA after
the ADSR, but I'm not quite sure if my master keyboard actually
processes strike velocity into a linear midi note velocity. I'll have to
play with my modular and see what sounds best. But, as I say I have
gotten used a particular sort, so it will difficult to know which is
actually better/more responsive.
