I'd consider little preamp before diode, also simple RC filter
for ripple could be subed with opamp filter.
Check SH09 schematic, it has very simple discrete preamp and
env fol with opamp filter:

Also, experiment with hpf BEFORE diode, say 10-100n with some
R to gnd, it might help lowering ripple.
