Embedded processors for DIY projects ?

Just a little note:
the 65C02 was our standard embedded 8 bit core for ages.
It still is for simple controllers.
The CMOS version (that the "c") has less unknowm opcodes,
or more opcodes available. e.g. unconditional relative branches.
This is some improvement over the nmos version instruction set.
I think it is the nicest 8 bit machine arround.
Now, if you want 16 bit performance, I'd not recommend
the 16 bit version, it's a cripple. No real 16 bit.
May be some ease for compiler building.
