descrete OTA in oscillators?

I noticed last night that the descrete OTA circuit that TomG posted last
year is the gain control element of the Buchla Oscillators. Otherwiase
it is very similar to the triangle oscillator in Barry Klein's book (I
think electronotes option 2 VCO?) This was quite a revelation for me.
(everyone else probably knew that!) Anyway, is there any good reason to
use descrete transistors over a 3080? the Buchla used a 3802 obsolete
matched PNP and a descrete pair of 2N3565.
