Welcome to Synth-DIY. I am afraid you have stumbled into the realm of
Geeks. Generally things here are pretty low key, in regards to what you
mention. But we do have a rather diverse collection of uh....characters.

If it is a low power transistor, i.e. a TO-92, find out what it is. If
it is a PNP or NPN, try a 2n3906/2n3904. In generally, those two
transistors will cover about 99.5% of you needs for transistors. If it is a
FET, then the question is a little tougher. I tried Digikey and Mouser and
Jameco, all three came up with no hits. If I can remember, I will check
with Part Miner when I get to work tomorrow.
Several of us also are making lists of where to get parts for doing
common things in Synth-DIY. I have one on my web page (see below), and at
least one other person on the list is doing the same thing. (although, the
2n5117 is not on my list).
