Embedded processors for DIY projects ?

I use the STK300, for mega avr series (64K flash) :) , this kit compares to
the stk 200.
The package is complete, works well and is supported with software updates.
AVRs are register oriented RISK processors, a bit like a 8 bit ARM or a
TMS9900.
The best way to take advantage of this seems to use assembler since it let
you reserve a register (=accu!)
for one parameter.
So far I only used the assembler, however there are several other options
around like Pascal or gnu C++.
