Hi Tim and others!
Thats possible, and it is being done in computer games. However I have
programs
which came with the onboard soundcard which does this. But I've got a real
soundcard too! One is a stupid game where you shoot boulders in space, and
can hear in which direction they're coming, at least with earphones!
The problem seems to be that every individual has different ears, and the
way you distinguish sounds in vertical and lateral directions depends on that.
Although I'd say its musically useful anyway! The shape of the filter/s
would have to be variable to be able to sense vertical direction. Ah, and
one should not forget doppler effects for a convincing moving sound source.
