Well, I've had a lot of luck mixing samples with noise then distorting them...
Try the noiseswash pedal for doubled up distortion you can find scematics at
www.angelfire.com/mo/commonsound I think I got the link right. Otherwise, two
pro-co Rats are really excellent for abrasive. In general, Either distort a
sound that's noisey or use two distortion pedals. A combo like a big muff then
Real Tube Overdrive gives a truely thick product. As far as DIY goes, try
www.geofex.com they have a modular distortion system they're working on. It
would be easy to build a pedal that doubles up on the gain and clipping stages
of some classic pedals. Also, Tomg's right. How hard something sounds is
relative to what's around it. I find Autechre rather abrasive at times while
Merzbow is quite relaxing once I get used to it.
