FWIW, I still sequence on one of these (a Forat 9000 that I got out of a pawn
shop... I thought it was a cash register at first glance). It's a great
unit, the friendliest sequencer I've ever used. It's pattern style
sequencing as opposed to the
linear style of most softsequencers, which is why I use it. Unfortunately,
mine is horribly unreliable and likes to lock up and dump your sequences (I
think this is due to harsh treatment by the previous owner and not
Forat's/Linn's fault), and, unfortunately, it only records 32 midi
controllers. On the plus side, you can burn your own ROMs and stick 'em in
there for some old skool sampling fun.
I talked to Forat about 'em... seems they wanted about $2k for a non-sampling
Forat 9000 if my memory serves correctly. While it is a great machine, you
can get a lot more for your money w/an Akai MPC-2000, which is the direct
descendant of the Linn9000. It's incredibly similar, right down to the
"repeat" button.
