The sherman endwork project revealed...

Hello all,

I talked to one of the guys that did their endwork for Sherman today. Their
assignement was: programming of a floating point DSP: videosynthesizer. The
DSP should take video images and get some audio out of it. (The other way
around is also possible, and would be a really cool show, I think...) They
didn't had the hardware to get in the video images, so they only finished
the software for the conversion of one still image, programmed in the DSP
memory with the computer.

The way it sortof works: the image is divided into pixels. There are 180
lines. Each line represents a frequency, and the color sets the amplitude.
For example, a black line (max amplitude) on the bottom of a white page (min
amplitude) would result in a wave at the lowest frequency.

>From what I understand, this means that the conversion goes from one side of
the image to the other side, and each line is a momentary image of the
frequency spectrum of the signal...

It doesn't have alot of musical possibilities, but the sound could be very
inspiring, said the man. Maybe a nice random noise source, but quite
expensive, right?

I've also moved the midiCV project site. The same address will now lead you
to a more complete site of my work. However, it's still under construction,
and there's nothing but a link to the midicv rpoject at the moment... One of
these days, I'll be putting pictures on it... Next week maybe...

I'm putting together a working version of the midiCV for my presentation
next week. A working version of the software still has to be written. This
shouldn't be much of a problem, I've had every bit of the board working,
just need to put the parts together, and have the midi messages correctly
handled...

Anyway, now you all know what sherman is up to. Last year I talked to
Sherman on the phone about a possible project for me, I could do the video
synth in Java if I wanted. I'm really glad I did the MIDI CV. And ytou've
all been a great help...

And a good friend of mine is looking for an endwork project too (for next
year)... If anyone of you has a great idea, a project he can do for you, or
on his own, let me know!!

Thanks,
Roel
