Hi Scott 

There is one technologie, taht is used by the Axxon guitar MIDI
controler: They are measuring the response time of the pulse which is
sent from the pick to the pressed fret and to the bridge. This give a
first information which is verified afterwards by the mentioned
classical methods. I tested it for the german Keys magazin. Very nice
piece. Especially the responsetime which was available for a bass guitar
was unbelievable fast.
