How about a scanning "keyboard" method. Have a fast (Really fast) sequencer
output DC to the frets bridge-to-nut on the neck. Read the strings
separately. By counting the steps (frets) till a high appears on the string
(read at the bridge end) you now the note played on that string. Throw in
some logic to ignore data if only there X number of passes (and a lower fret
is high +X passes) and you get rid of fret buzz. The voltages would be kept
low to protect the innocent.
