I like this idea if you are willing to give up string bending and such.
What would be cool is if each string tensioner could be separate and could
be used to send pitchbend based on a rise in tension on the string sounding
that note (shorting those frets). Of course, for polyphony, each string
would need to be on its own channel because of the global nature of
pitchbend.
However, I have a question. Wouldn't it be necessary to count frets from
the bridge end of the fretboard instead of the nut. So, the "3rd string"
is shorting (touching) "n" and "any other fret(s) below (toward the nut)"
Other wise, one could not accommodate "bar chords".
