Thanks Theo, a good synopsis.

But I actually said that explaining your homebrew kit to some jobs worth
who won't let you play at a public venue because you haven't got a PAT
PASSED sticker on your machine would be difficult.

However, most of us have built stuff that doesn't adhere to any
particular safety rule. We just build it and bung it in a case when we
get it working. This may not, of course, be a good thing :-)
