RF-people have steep filters at hand to filter any unwanted "harmonics"

This brings up an interesting thought again: If one is after a more linear
RM one could apply a diode-linearization externally to the MC1496. There is a
linearization network made out ouf a CA3046 shown in Harris AN6077 Figure 6.
It seems to be similar to the linearization of BA6110 or CA3280.
