This is basically what these chips do already. A 4096 stage chip is
actually two 2048 devices in parallel, 180 deg out of phase. A trimmer
connected across the two phased outputs is adjusted to cancel out much
of the clock noise.

When you do the math to figure out clock speeds vs delay times, you use
the 2048 figure. 

A compander is a virtual necessity for BBD devices, unless you enjoy a
lot of hisssssss....
