Nor do they have the high impedance of a scope, their bandwidth will be
around 20KHz rather than the 20MHz or more of a cheap scope and they
may be noisier than the 16+ bit spec of the soundcard suggests.

However, they only cost the price of download time if you already have a PC
and soundcard (I guess that covers a high proportion of those on the list).
And
there's usually spectrum analyser software thrown in too.
