I think you really need a scope.  You can debug a lot of a synth with
just a signal-tracing probe and listening, but VCOs and waveshapers
really require a scope.  I used a 5 Mhz Heathkit, which didn't work
quite right.  Someday I'll buy a decent scope.

Scope features that you want: Triggered sweep.  Don't get one without
it.  Dual trace would be good, especially for looking at synch and
modulations.
