ASM-1 question re bypass caps

Paul (and Don),
The Fry's down in Campbell only has a few resistor packs for reasonable
prices. The rest of the once large stock of components has been replaced by
NTE garbage. I don't know it this is happening at all the stores. Don
mentioned all the places I go except one--Jameco. It's on the peninsula and
not that far down 101 from SF. They do mail order if you can't make the 20
mile drive...
You don't know brutal until you've tried to build a synth on a student's
budget in upstate South Carolina. Radio Shack and a TV parts store were all
I had in a 100 mile radius! In Silicon Valley the detritus of constant
change fills the surplus shops with wonderful trailing edge parts for DIY.
Enjoy it!
Doug

I didn't know Fry's had components! There's a Fry's only 40 minutes away!
The others are all on the south peninsula - at least an hour.
I repeat - it's brutal out here. Maybe I should be making digital synths.

Tirade: Now, who would have thought that I wouldn't be able to buy
.1uF caps locally? In the SF Bay Area of all places. I don't see
a lot of hands out there. But yes, the only parts store in the SF
East Bay (besides Radio Shack) only had 10 of them! Buying parts
out here is infuriating.
What, there's no Fry's near you?
(An explanation for out-of-towners; Fry's is a remarkable chain of
stores around here. They used to be a supermarket of electronic
parts; lots of ICs and transistors, computers, peripherals, cabling,
etc. Their big hook was that they also carried stuff you might need
if you don't get out of the lab very often; cola, snacks, magazines
and tampons. So you would often see advertisements from them for
sales on both DRAM chips and toothpaste. Really funny. Nowadays the
electronics parts stock isn't as good as it used to be, they carry
more appliances, and their salespeople are useless. But they still
carry an awful lot of good stuff.)
How about Haltek in Mountain View?
HSC in Santa Clara?
San Mateo Eletronics Supply in San Mateo?
HdB Electronics in Menlo Park?
All Electronics in San Jose?
Zack Electronics in San Jose?
R & D Electronic Parts in Milpitas?
Yeah, none of these are in the East Bay, but it's not that long a
drive.
