absolute newbie wants to build a ribbon controller

Hello, 

I'm just starting out with this whole audio
electronics thing, but am curious whether it would be
possible to build a ribbon controller.  I really have
no idea even what these things are made of, but I know
that I love 'em and would love to build one if it were
possible.  Anybody got links to info about ribbons?
