BBD-MN3010 and MN3011-is a MN3101 clock necessary?

Another popular clock circuit for BBDs is a 4046 as high-frequency VCO, followed
by a 4041 with its inverters set up as Q/notQ and paralleled for extra current 
drive.  Craig Anderton used this in one of his designs to drive an SAD4096, 
which has an unbelievable 1000 pF clock line capacitance.
