White LEDs

I got a couple red/green/blue free samples from 
Kingbright, but haven't tried them yet.

And white LEDs... What a crazy age we live in.
The way I understand it is they are a blue LED
with white phosphor.  What I don't understand is
how they get a narrow beam out of that.
I'd like to mount a couple on my 
glasses for headlights.
