The BC550C is my "workhorse" small signal transistor, because it has high
beta, low noise and can stand some voltage as well.
In this particular circuit, neither high beta nor increased voltage is
needed.
Pretty much any silicon small signal npn will do, as long as it can stand
30V.
But choose a low noise type if you want a good SNR of the VCAs.
(Circuit is for private use only, i.e. no commercial products.)
