Self-education....

Hi.

I'm a newbie when it comes to synth-diy and
electronics 
so i wonder how to calculate how many volts/amperes is
being dissipated by a ca3080 or a regular Op-amp.

I understand the general concepts, but so far i
haven't got any satisfactory equation or similar to be
able to use this knowledge. 

Is there anything else but this (and the basic
transistor - resistor knowledge) that is critical to
know to search out errors in circuits?
