For an application like this, it might be useful to have a control CV 
coming in, which goes to one of those National Semi LED bargraph drivers,
with the output that would have controlled the leds, running the logic.
Yeah there are other ways, but this might get the parts count down.
I think by putting an ultrasonic dither triangle on the CV, you could make
a scanning linear interpolator like this too ;-)
