Atari 2600 sound chip

Maybe I don't remember my Atari well, wasn't the sound in the POKEY chip in
the Atari 800? I could have sworn that the sound in the Atari 800 was basically
the same as the 2600 (but maybe not the same chip).
Of course, I could just be halucinating.....
