The new AVR chip where you can program the program memory from
the controller (the mega161, I think it's called) also has
a hardware multiplier. It has instructions for ordinary integer multiplication,
as well as fixed-point (aka fractional (sp?) ) multiplication.
It takes two cycles (that's 3 million multiplications per second at 6MHz)!
