maybe you know this, but here's my 2 cents

A PCB sub-assembly manufacturer can populate the boards for a reasonable
cost if you supply them with all the parts; PCB, electronics components,
hardware, etc.. You save money by doing all the ordering and parts
purchasing yourself and, only use the sub assembler to put it all
together in an assembly line fashion. When I was doing electronics
design for a company a few years back, we did this "sub-out" quite
often. For simple PCB's to be assembled it costs about $25 to $40 per
board depending on complexity. You save alot of cost per board if you do
the majority of hardware assembly and only use the sub assembler to
populated the electronics... the unit cost  also depends on volume
manufactured, of course. The more you make at one time, the less per
unit cost.
