Newby Question on Synth terms

I'm trying to nail down the finalized specs for a DIY analog/modular.  I 
*thought* I was conversant in synth terminology (I grew up during the glory 
days of MOOG), but I'm having a problem finding good definitions of the 
following:

Sync

FM

Whazzat?  Several module schematics I've found feature these as inputs.  Are 
these worthwhile having on a low-end analog box?  What kind of signal are 
they expecting to see (it's tempting to think the "sync" will be a 
clock...)?  How will they modify my sound?
