Although they may not be "exciting" modules, I buillt a few simple LFOs as my 
first circuits.  Usually the parts count is fairly low, and the circuits are 
simple to understand.  You can test the output with a voltmeter, or even just 
an LED.  

You're gonna need LFOs at some point, so their simplicity makes for a good 
first module, IMO.  You can work up to the more complex stuff after you get 
better at your layout skills
