The power supply stiff here tells me what's missing: +12 or +15 V!
The drum tone board was designed to be dropped into a project with a single
ended supply, and uses +5 as a midpoint within the circuit. You still need
to add +12 or +15 to fully power it up.
...but I've just flipped through my old manual, and don't see this mentioned
anywhere!
As for triggering, I was able to test mine with a little switch. You might
also be able to trigger it directly from a little Radio-Shack piezo
transducer (about $3). I also took a slow pulse train from a bench
oscillator, and had a very simple drum machine!
