Hi Paul, all joking and kidding aside...not when you think of it in
real estate...a ota, pnp, cap and a few resistors is only about 16
pads per vca. This is about the same you would have to give up
for a 3 transistor version ( If you could come up with one).
Then there is the quality of the output to consider. Using OTAs
you can almost get to the rails. Most simple options offer less. If
size is the problem think SMD.
Think of it like this...+V,-V,GND,IN,OUT,CV. That's 6 right
there. Add a resistor or 2 a couple of caps and you are right
back at 16 pads before you know it. No matter what you use.
Might as well OTA. For what it's worth, that's what I think
anyway.
