I've seen a 4049 also used in a compressor... and am prototyping it as a 
phaser unit.. it's quite a neato idea.. if you look in the spec sheets, its 
a complementary pair of fets.. so conn gnd & vcc both to gnd, apply bias to 
the input pin, and the o/p pin is a voltage controlled res going to gnd.. 
neat! this could yet be the chip for a really low cost phaser unit.. the 
fets should be inherently matched, & thermally coupled.. saves matching 
them, also gets around the dwindling options for ota's..
