You might consider the PIC microcontroller series of parts from MicroChip.
you can get all the development software for free and there are plenty of
folks selling programmers for under $100. Books are plentiful as well as web
sites just search for PIC Microcontrollers. The transition from 6502 should
not be all that bad especially when your friend sees that all memory and the
I\O stuff is on-chip. The drawback when doing MIDI stuff is the limited
amount of RAM but off-chip memory is readily available and the housekeeping
software is available on the Microchip site. http://www.microchip.com

I've used the PIC parts ever since they came out and really like them.
