This is what I keep wondering about. This kind of educated-torture is 
a little beyond my experience, so if somebody has already figured it 
out...

If you're using a fixed delay for the "straight" signal the other one 
is the actual "delay". But who knows what weird things might happen?

Try them all. But +/- feedback on the variable delay is the obvious 
place to start.
