You could allways use TeX or even LaTeX. That would give you pretty nice
printouts and even page layout. I usually use LyX (http://www.lyx.org/)
to write document in and I can do pretty nasty formulas without it breaking
(well, it did a long time ago, but I reported the bug and it is now long gone).
You can get GIF/TIFF/PNG output is you really want.
TeX is the text layout tool written by Donald Knuth (as in "The Art of Computer
Programing"). TeX gives really, really nice results and I would not be
supprised to find that a number of people here would have written their thesis
in it.
LyX is just a WYSIWYM GUI frontend which uses TeX for the real formating.
Both are free.
