TeX - this was written by Donald Knuth who got frustrated at the poor
typesetting of his books and decided to take the time to write a typesetting
program. There are some commercial distributions but the source is free and
binaries are available. And if you search for TeX on the web - no,
Microsoft did not buy TeX - this was an April Fool's joke from a few years
ago... :)

Subject: ot: formula editor needed
Does anyone know a PD or FREE mathematical formula editor,
so I can set up proper looking math formulas
in text documents?
Please not Mathematica or other expensive stuff.
Best would be graphical output, like .gif
Thanks.
