Advice on books and construction

I'm somewhat new to the DiY scene and have only experience with kits and
distortion circuits but I'm looking to learn more about modular
synths.  I'm starting by building a filter bank of somekind to fatten up
some of my digital gear.  Hopefully I'll have an MS20 style filter from
Tom's Synth Cookbook on the breadboard soon.  I'm looking for advice on
the components and construction because I figure this is a rather popular
circuit.  Specifically, what diodes should I use and what tolerance and
make of resistors?  Also I'd like some books on building synths and how
the circuitry works, does anyone have any tips on this?
