resistors: 5% vs 1% etc ?

Usually not, because of temperature stability issues... also carbon comps will
change value slightly (and permanently) with soldering temperatures. Cal techs
that used to work for our company (when we did "hard" cals) would compensate by
trimming slightly lower and then when they soldered the part in it would be
right on... They were proud of their abilities in this regard....
