triggered s&h, in phasers or modules?

Hey,
I've heard tunes where the sample-and-hold on a phaser or other filter/fx was in time with the beat or triggered by each new note.  Can anyone tell me how this is done?  Are there prefab fx boxes or synths that trigger each step of the s&h from an external clock, or from the incoming audio?  Are there modules that can be configured to do this?
