Good Question #1: Signal Diodes

Whatever difference there are so small they can be
ignored. The 1N914 used to be the choice when you needed
a generic diode (high speed, < 60V, < 1 amp, reasonably
low leakage, I have measure reverse leakage on a batch
of 1N914s and its around 10 nanoamps at room temperature)
That is an old part number, somewhere along the line you
started seeing 1N4148 as "the" generic diode. I have used
them interchangeably for years without problem.
