I don't know if this answers your question, but the Xpander's external CV's
are quantized. I don't have an Xpander, so I don't know how coarse the
quantizing is (they might be quantized to half-steps!). I think the main
purpose for the external CV's (in the viewpoint of Oberheim) was to allow the
user to drive his Xpander from the CV outputs of the old Oberheim DSX
sequencer (maybe they weren't yet sure if this MIDI thing was going to catch
on...). The DSX CV output was quantized to half-step intervals.
