If it's part of the small-signal audio circuitry, you can use either a 1N914 
or 1N4148 silicon diode.  If it's part of a power supply section, it's best 
to use a more robust, high voltage/current diode, such as a 1N4002.  These 
parts are available pretty much everywhere - even at Radio Shack!
