> The reason the Minimoog (and probably the Formant) has a second VCA is to
provide control over overall volume, ala alternate controller (footpedal
voltage control) or MIDI Volume CC Message. The 1st VCA is controlled by
the EG, the second is overall volume. That's what the rear panel jack
marked "VCA" is for, it's normalled to a fixed voltage to keep the 2nd VCA
wide open.
I know. So the "musicality" may as well be an unintentional side effect of
squeezing the maximum
SNR out of a normally cheap discrete design. But as it is, the second stage
is fed with the signal of the
first at a level that just gives some "extra rounding". I have once made
some simulations of the
nonlinearities involved, and it's a true pleasure for the eye to see how
nicely the two stages work
together.
