Back in the old days -

The beating of slightly detuned tone sources
was called the "ensemble effect" and was supposedly
responsible for the "richness" of acoustic ensembles.

This lead several companies like ARP and Moog to
decide that more than one oscillator was required to 
capture the "ensemble effect".
