'Pulse Width' on arbitrary waveforms other than square..

Hi all,
I've been thinking about PWM on waves other than the historically default
square..
What I can't clarify in my mind is what exactly I'm supposed to be
seeing/hearing..

I've reduced the options to 2
Is it Rosemary?
1/ AM (using the pulse wave) of a DC rectified version of the waveform to
which to apply PWM to.

Or could it be Sarge?
2/ AM by pulse wave, but not bother rectifying the wave..

Or is it Penry, with magic voodoo?
3/ Deeper than that involving some complex phase modulation to produce
'complete' cycles in each half of the pulse, scaled by some voodoo with the
PW??

Both sound cool (#1 sounds more right if you know what I mean?), but I'm
puzzled as to which is 'correct'. And #3 I'm still trying to work out how to
achieve 'simply', but I fear won't sound 'right' but may sound sexy all the
same.
