I agree. I have discarded all I've heard after listening to their fake VCFs,
and didn't bother to examine their fake VCOs any further. So I cannot really
back up my asumption.

You shouldn't be able to hear the difference if you play the sample *once*.
But our ears (and brains) are sensible for pitch variations over a much
longer span of time than a few seconds. I don't have the theory at hand for
that one either, but I'm convinced there is some valid theory behind that.
