   One thing I'd rather do, if we're talking MIDI control, is to use two 
CCs and assemble a larger word length.  At least then you can use one CC 
for coarse (no worse than before) and one for fine.
   But then I don't know if MIDI would really be fast enough to still 
provide smooth transitions.  Maybe.  But you'd most likely have to write 
custom software to take advantage of such a setup.
