Hi Juergen

> (1) Which battery to use ?

Any quality 3.6V NiCd rechargeable batt rated over 170mAh
used in cordless phones (3 cell package).
I used Panasonic KX-A36A 3.6 V 300mAh and it's almost 2 yrs now
since I'd replaced it and works no problem.
I placed it in plastic box near Xformer and connected
it to board with pair of wires.

If I remember it works (as memory has power during power on)
but you lose all programs in the moment

Heat makes it leak more and also it's very hard to desolder it
without affecting nearby electonics (batt is welded). I cut off both
holders with
wire cutters in the base (you get tiny soldered pins there)
and soldered wires to connect the battery.
You can also use Li batt but then you must disable recharge
circuit by replacing R91 (see schems online) with diode and cutoff
capacitor.
There was page online about this mod but can't remember which one
(see polysix digiest page for this info).

Traces can be easily repaired as there was online PCB

good luck!!!
