I've recently picked up an excellent reference book - it's a "Receiver Tube
Manual" by RCA, printed in 1959. A co-worker gave it to me out of an old TV
repairman's tube caddy (he had two books so he gave me one).

At least I think it's excellent, there may be better references out there...
but this has chapters on tube characteristics, construction, design
philosophy, and example circuits including a bunch of preamp and power amp
designs. And those are just the text sections - the largest section of the
book consists of a databook of most tube types (I think it's just the ones
that RCA made, but it seems like there's at least a couple hundred). Pinouts
and specs for each tube.

I've realized that this book is simply an electronic component data book
from a long time ago, much like our National and Motorola and Analog Devices
etc. etc. databooks of today. The 1959 edition is just one out of a large
number of them that must have been published. But it's really good for a
learner like me.

It doesn't have things like 6550's or 6CA7's (too early?) or 300B's (not
RCA?), but it does have all the other popular audio tubes plus a lot of TV
stuff. One of these from a later year might be more comprehensive but this
one is sure helpful.

I think there's places on the web where you can order old used tube
manuals - Eric may be able to help here...
